Terms of use
The rules for using Jiraan, and what we do to keep it safe.
Last updated 30 October 2026
The short version
- Be honest about who you are and about the room.
- Never ask for or pay money before a viewing.
- Be respectful, and keep to your own section.
- Report anything that feels wrong. We look at every report within 2 days.
Who runs Jiraan
Jiraan is run by [full name and postal address, to be added before launch], an individual in England trading as Jiraan. Email us at hello@jiraan.uk. By joining Jiraan you agree to these terms.
What Jiraan is, and isn’t
Jiraan is a free noticeboard where Muslims in the UK find rooms, housemates and homes. We don’t own, manage or inspect any property. We don’t check people’s identity or their permission letters. We aren’t part of any tenancy or agreement you make with another member, and we never handle rent or deposits.
Who can join
- You must be 18 or over. We delete accounts we find belong to anyone younger.
- Jiraan is for Muslims living in, or moving to, the UK.
- You must truthfully say whether you’re a brother or a sister.
- One account each. Keep your sign-in to yourself.
House rules
On Jiraan you must not:
- lie about who you are, your section, or a room, or list a room that doesn’t exist or isn’t yours to let;
- ask anyone for money before they’ve viewed a room in person, or try any other scam;
- offer or ask for sex, sexual favours or a relationship in return for a room or lower rent. This is a crime, and we report it to the police;
- harass, threaten, stalk or abuse anyone, or keep messaging someone who has asked you to stop;
- post hateful content about anyone, including because of their race, religion, sex, disability or sexuality;
- contact the other section, or try to get into it;
- let a room without the permission you need from your landlord or mortgage lender, or break housing law, such as Right to Rent checks, deposit protection or licensing;
- post or send anything illegal, including terrorist content, child sexual abuse material, or offers of drugs or weapons, or offer housing to help someone avoid immigration control;
- share anyone else’s personal details without their permission;
- use Jiraan to advertise anything other than a room or a home.
How we keep Jiraan safe
- Every listing, room-wanted profile and conversation has a Report button. You can also email us at hello@jiraan.uk.
- Block someone from any conversation and they can’t message you anywhere on Jiraan.
- We don’t read your messages as a matter of routine. A moderator reads a conversation only after one of the two people in it reports it. A reported conversation is kept until 12 months after its last message, even if someone deletes their account, so we can deal with the report.
- We look at every report within 2 days. We consider the report, the content and its context, and anything the people involved tell us. Where we have reasonable grounds to think something is illegal, or it breaks these terms, we take it down.
- Depending on what happened, we may also warn you, or suspend or ban your account. A ban takes down all your listings and your room-wanted profile.
- We report child sexual abuse, terrorism, threats to life and offers of a room for sex to the police or the right authority.
Complaints and appeals
You can complain to us about:
- something on Jiraan you think is illegal or breaks these terms;
- how we handled a report;
- us taking down something you posted, or suspending or banning your account;
- us not following these terms or the Online Safety Act.
Email hello@jiraan.uk with “Complaint” in the subject. Say what happened and, if you can, which listing, profile or conversation it’s about. We reply within 7 days with what we found and what we’ve done. If we took something down or banned someone by mistake, we put it back or lift the ban.
If you’re still unhappy, you can tell Ofcom, the UK’s online safety regulator, at ofcom.org.uk. Ofcom doesn’t settle individual complaints, but uses them to check services follow the law.
What you post
You own your listings, profile and messages. You let us show them to the members who are meant to see them, for as long as they’re on Jiraan. You’re responsible for making sure they’re true and lawful, and we may take down anything that breaks these terms.
Leaving, suspension and bans
You can delete your account at any time from your account page. If you break these terms or the law, we may suspend or ban your account. You’ll see this when you next use Jiraan, and you can appeal by email as above.
Our responsibility to you
Jiraan is free. We work to keep it running and safe, but we can’t promise it will always be available, or that every listing or member is genuine. We aren’t responsible for what members say or do, or for any tenancy, deposit or payment between members, so take the care described on our safety page. Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility where the law doesn’t allow it, such as for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. Nothing here affects your legal rights.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Jiraan changes. We’ll show the date of the latest version at the top, and tell members on the site before any important change applies.
The law that applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring a claim in the courts of the part of the UK where you live.
How we use your personal data is explained in our privacy notice.
